Briefing of the Ambassadors of the Non-Aligned Movement member states

On the 10th of June 2020, the online briefing of the heads of diplomatic missions of the Non-Aligned Movement member states accredited in Geneva was held in participation of Ms. Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The aim of the briefing focused on the discussion of cooperation issues in the area of human rights in the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement, as well as the pronouncement of the initiative of Turkmenistan on the establishment of the Group of Friends of Neutrality for the sake of Peace, Security and Development.   

During the briefing, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan voiced the words of the President of Turkmenistan on the 25th anniversary of international recognition of the Neutrality status of Turkmenistan.  This date is interconnected with yet another significant date – the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s membership in the Non-Aligned Movement.  It is exactly at the Summit of the Heads of States and Governments of the Non-Aligned Movement which took place in the Colombian city of Cartagena in October of 1995, the intent of Turkmenistan to become a neutral state was unanimously supported by the non-aligned countries.     

Then, the concept of establishing the given Group consisting of the aims and format, intention to assist the use of neutrality policy experience with the purpose of contributing to the strengthening of international and regional stability was voiced.  It was also noted that the creation of the Group is aimed at contributing to closer multilateral cooperation with the aim of applying the neutrality principles and preventive diplomacy by the means of dialogue.     

Simultaneously, it was noted that it is envisioned to add the issues on the preparations to the International Conference on peace, security and development which is planned to take place in Ashgabat in December of 2020 to the agenda of the Group’s work.
