Specialists of the water economy in cooperation with UNDP are implementing a project to introduce energy-saving technologies

The meeting of the Council of the joint program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources and UNDP was held in Ashgabat, with the participation of national experts with regard to rational water use. The meeting participants discussed the first results of the project "Effective use of energy and renewable energy sources for sustainable water management in Turkmenistan" (2015-2021).
Activities at two pilot sites located in the Akhal region are currently conducted. The self-flowing delivery pipeline-water with water intake from the Laiyn-Suw river for water supply of Kaakhka city is under construction. This will be substitution for an existing canal with a length of twenty kilometers. Various types of irrigation are tested: drip irrigation, sprinkling and traditional furrowing in the Geoktepe area in the territory of the production site of the scientific research institute “Turkmen Hydro project”.
The Council members drafted a work plan for the near future including such energy-saving measures as assistance in the operation of diesel pumping units when they are transferred to power supply, the use of solar energy for supplying high-quality drinking water to the territory near the village of Bury in Central Karakum. The cooperation of project specialists and enterprises in the Akhal, Dashoguz and Mary regions producing concrete pipes and slabs is planned. In particular, the ways of using synthetic cables instead of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete slabs, the production of plastic sheets for canal lining, as well as special non-pressure concrete and plastic pipes for water supply and drainage are suggested.
